Up since October of 2017, the mural is the work of Swedish artist Ola Kalnins, who was commissioned by Peter Kirchhausen, the building’s owner, to create this site-specific piece. Kalnins painted the mural on this four-story building over the course of 8 days. You can watch a fun short (3 min.) film on the story behind the mural HERE
The vibrant colors and historic architecture make it a popular Greenpoint destination.
Plenty of tourists, locals, hipsters, photographers and artists like Steve flock to Greenpoint and Manhattan Ave where the fresh, colorful mural pops against the gritty beauty of the past, which Greenpoint has plenty of.
Because it’s such a traveled-to destination it’s really as neighborhood icon or landmark. With so many eyes looking, capturing and remembering this living piece of art, it makes a perfect subject for Steve to paint, and so he did…
A nice frame always makes a painting really pop! I love what the framer did for this collector, owner of “Greenpoint Deli”
